A Bold Journey into Mental Health Social Work: Stories, Strategies, and the Road to Private Practice

3–4 minutes

Welcome to my blog! I’m thrilled to have a space to share my journey as I work toward specializing in mental health social work. This isn’t just a place for updates on my career; I hope it will grow into a lively community where social workers connect, reflect, and share—whether you’re interested in building a private practice or simply exploring mental health social work on a deeper level.

Starting Small, Dreaming Big

I graduated with a Bachelor of Social Work from The University of Sydney and stepped quietly into community-based social work. In those early days, I never imagined I’d be aiming for something much bigger. But over time, I developed a powerful goal: to one day open my own private practice, dive deeper into the field of psychology, and create a new path in mental health support.

This blog will document that journey, and I hope it becomes a place to spark ideas, share challenges, and inspire other social workers who might also have big dreams of their own.

The Power of Diversity and Boldness in Social Work

As someone from an Asian background, my journey in social work has had unique challenges—but it’s also brought unique strengths. My background has shaped my perspective on client care and helped me connect more authentically with people from all walks of life. I hope to encourage more social workers from diverse backgrounds to share their voices, support each other, and discuss the race-related challenges we all face in this field.

Why Mental Health?

Working in mental health services has been both a challenge and a reward, and I’m more passionate about it every day. I’ll be sharing real (confidential) case studies and true stories from the field, from the tough moments to the funny, unexpected ones. I’ll also dive into specific mental health diagnoses, the symptoms we encounter, and trauma-informed strategies that help us build rapport and support clients effectively.

In future posts, you’ll find honest reflections on why some clients are more challenging than others (and what we can learn from them). I’ll explore mental health theories, and I might even challenge a few of them. After all, social workers are trained to be self-reflective and to question norms, so let’s put that skill to good use here!

It’s Okay to Dream Big—and Be a Little Bold

I’ve seen firsthand the challenges our clients face due to funding limitations and the lack of affordable mental health support. These gaps have inspired me to think bigger. In addition to my goal of private practice, I’m interested in developing strategies to better educate clients on mental health and build their resilience, even within a short-term program.

We’ll also talk about bold ideas, like my thoughts on how funding in mental health could be restructured to better meet people’s needs. I want to explore questions like: What if we invested more in preventative care? How could social workers contribute to policy change? If these ideas interest you, I hope you’ll follow along as we dig into these big-picture issues.

Building a Community of Social Work Experience

For those of us interested in private practice, resources are limited when it comes to self-promotion, building a business, and managing the unique challenges of working independently. I’ve attended mentoring programs and worked with external supervisors to guide my journey, and now I want to share what I’m learning with others.

If you’re a social worker, student, or just curious about the field, this blog is for you. Here, you’ll find true stories from the field (confidentiality preserved, of course) and real-world insights into the everyday experiences of a community-based social worker.

Let’s build a supportive, creative space where we can celebrate our wins, confront our challenges, and talk openly about the mental health field’s future. Whether you’re here to learn about specific client strategies, explore big-picture ideas, or connect with other social workers, I’m excited to have you along for the journey.
